This question is one that I ask myself again and again, especially as Facebook is developing continuously. Bear in mind that depending on when you read this article, certain points might have already been changed.
Definitions:
Page: A page is a representation of a business, public person, band, artist, company or organization on Facebook.
Group: A group is usually for a smaller number of people who have a common interest.
Here are the main differences:
Publicity: Groups can be kept closed or secret, whereas pages are intended to help a business or individual communicate publicly.
Publicity on the net: One of the key differences is that pages are indexed by search engines such as Google, whereas groups are not. This is an important point to remember when deciding whether you want to create a group or a page.
Joining: If you want to join a group, you need to click the button on the page called: 'Ask to Join Group' and wait for the administrator's approval. On a page you will find a button called 'Like' and as soon as you have clicked it you've become a fan or follower.
Members/followers: Group members have to be approved whereas page followers become fans as soon as they click the 'like' button on top of the page.
Posts/updates: If a group administrator posts something on a group it appears to be coming from them personally, whereas updates on pages appear to be coming from the page itself.
Who can create them? A group can be created by anyone interested in some topic, a page can only be created by an official representative of the business.
Updating fans/group members: As a page administrator you can update your fans, no mater what the size of your fan community is. In a group this is limited to 5000 members, which means that if you group has more members you are no longer able to send them a group message.
Administrators: In a group you will be able to see the administrators in the left column. On a page the administrator may be able to be seen if her or she is featured in the "Page Owners" section of the page.
Applications: pages can host applications, which means it can be more personalized whereas groups are not able to do this.
Group or page - which one to create?
If you are currently asking yourself whether you should create a group or page the points of difference above will help you make this decision. It really depends on what it is that you want to portray and what you want to get out of your interaction with your members, fans or followers.
